Scugog Arts is excited to announce the second year of our Spring Arts festival, Small Town BIG, will be taking place this year from Saturday, May 6th to Sunday, May 13th, 2023.

On May 8th to 10th, Scugog Arts will be out in our lane-way painting Barn Quilt mural boards for Durham Region Barn Quilt Trails. Join us and become a painter for these unique pieces. They will then be put up for display at the farms surrounding Port Perry for Culture Days! Paint with your friends and family, no experience required!

Join Scugog Arts as we paint beautiful Barn Quilts to adorn our rural community!

Dr. Amy Barron and “The Dawn of Writing” Lecture Community Events

How did mankind first learn to record his thoughts in writing? And why? These are some of the questions we will look at in this whirlwind tour through 4000 years of history as people of the Middle East developed the first forms of communication. Join us as we travel from clay tokens to Mesopotamian cuneiform and Egyptian hieroglyphics, and eventually, thank goodness, the alphabet that we use today. Something to think about next time you sit down with a good book, or perhaps an e-reading tablet that is not so different than our ancient ancestors.

Scugog Shores Museum Village Opens for the Season! Community Events

Join us at the Museum to explore the 11 buildings of our historic pioneer village, as well as our Ojibway Heritage Interpretive Lands.  Guided tours are provided Wednesday to Sunday, from 10 am to 4 pm, throughout the summer.  Regular admission rates apply.

We Are The Rebels Community Events

“We Are The Rebels” is a seasonal exhibit that commemorates Port Perry High School’s 150th Anniversary.  A variety of photographs and artifacts from the Museum’s collection will be on display to celebrate the history of the High School.  This exhibit will be showcased in the Emporium of the Schoolhouse throughout the 2023 open season.

The Grand Event "Broadway Revisited" Community Events

It’s a Grand Event!

Mark your calendar for “Broadway Revisited” a musical celebration. Saturday, May 27th, 7:30 p.m. at Port Perry United Church. Lead by musical director Joan Bretney. Feature the Port Perry United Church senior choir, (the crowd favourite) junior choir, amazing soloists, and talented flautist Laural Griffen. The special guests of the evening will be the Reunion Choir of Fenelon Falls, under the direction of Eleanor Bailey. Music will include selections from many favourite Broadway musicals including Oklahoma,The Sound of Music, StateFair, Little Mermaid, Matilda, Evita , Waitress, and Wicked.

All are welcome. Tickets are not required. A free-will offering will be received.

Plan now to attend and bring your family and friends.

Port Perry Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides Community Events

The Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides is a national fundraising walk held in local communities in each province across Canada. It raises funds to help Lions Foundation of Canada continue to fulfill its mission of empowering Canadians with disabilities to navigate their world with confidence and independence by providing Dog Guides at no cost to them and supporting each pair in their journey together.

Join artist Sarah Shaw for a morning of creativity and fun at the Scugog Shores Museum Village!  Learn how to create your own masterpiece of “Spring Garden” by following Sarah’s step-by-step painting instructions.

This workshop includes professional instruction, all painting supplies, and a tour of the village!

Durham Accessibility Conference - Power of Inclusion: Moving Accessibility from Awareness to Action Community Events

Abilities Centre in collaboration with Durham Region is hosting the second annual Durham Accessibility Conference.

The theme for this year is Power of Inclusion: Moving Accessibility from awareness to action. This free virtual conference features keynote speaker Mark Wafer, and a panel discussion. Attendees will hear about the value that inclusion brings when we practice ability acceptance in the workplace and leave with practical tips on embedding accessibility throughout the employment cycle.

Panelists include:

  • Glenda Watson Hyatt ,Researcher, Queens University
  • Ratsamy Pathammavong , Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy Lead, CBC
  • Sophie Lemieux , People and Talent Manager, Fable Tech Labs

This free conference will support creating and maintaining a diverse and inclusive work environment - a place where each person can feel they belong and benefit from the organization’s collective success.

Real time captioning and American Sign Language interpretation will be available.
